IOSOT2016 will continue the long-standing tradition to offer some relaxed excursions on the Wednesday afternoon. This pause in the academic programme affords congress attendees the opportunity to relax their minds in order to engage again in heavy academic debates in the following two days! But, it also gives the opportunity to rub shoulders with other scholars from other contexts, in a relaxed environment.

The four options are listed below. All excursions will depart from the congress venue (Arts building) on Wednesday, 7 September 2016 at 13:30. They will return to Stellenbosch at the latest by 18:30 on the same evening. Thereafter, a relaxed and typical South African “braaivleis” (barbecue) will be on offer, for which you may register (see more information on the “braaivleis” on the Cultural Events page).

Excursion 1: “Wine, history and Mandela’s release” Bus tour from Stellenbosch to Franschhoek. Included: Wine tasting at Solms Delta Wine farm; Visit place where Mr Nelson Mandela was released on 11 February 1990; Visit French Huguenot monument and museum in Franschhoek; Leisure time in Franschhoek.
Excursion 2: “Nature, ocean, penguins and (perhaps) some whales” Bus tour along the coast line of False Bay, with return to Stellenbosch over Sir Lowry’s Pass. Included: Drive along the coast line of False Bay to Kleinmond; Spot some whales during the drive (hopefully); See penguin colony; See Cape “fynbos” vegetation in Harold Porter Nature Reserve; Viewpoint on False Bay and Cape peninsula from the top of Sir Lowry’s Pass.
Excursion 3: “All you can drink!” Bus tour through the Stellenbosch Winelands and wine tasting at famous wine cellars. Included: Taste sparkling wine and Cap Classique “champagne” style wine at JC le Roux Cellar; Wine tasting of red and white wine variety at a nearby wine cellar; Taste Cape brandy, “cognac” style, at Van Rijn Brandy Distillers.
Excursion 4: “Cape Town Waterfront” Bus tour to Cape Town Waterfront. Included: Drive from Stellenbosch to Cape Town; Visit the Two Oceans Aquarium in the Cape Town Waterfront; Leisure time in the Waterfront for shopping / coffee.
Excursion 5: “Cape Town Township trip” Bus tour to Cape Town townships and Bo-Kaap. Visit Langa, the oldest township in Cape Town, as well as some projects in Khayelitsha. Travel further to District 6, the part of central Cape Town that was evacuated during the Apartheid regime. Experience the vibrancy and colourful houses of the Bo-Kaap.
