A word of welcome from the president
It is an honour to invite you to the 22nd congress of IOSOT, which will take place at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. This is only the second time in the history of the IOSOT (since 1950) that it will convene outside of Europe – the other occasion was Jerusalem in 1986.
As is the tradition, the congresses of the International Organization for Septuagint and Cognate Studies (IOSCS), of the International Organization for Massoretic Studies (IOMS), of the International Syriac Language Project (ISLP) and for the Study of Targumic Studies (IOTS) will be combined with IOSOT. In addition, a number of meetings of the South African societies of Ancient Near Eastern and Old Testament studies will also be on the programme.
There will be 15 keynote speakers at the congress during the morning sessions, presented by prominent colleagues who have not previously had the opportunity of presenting a main lecture. In the afternoon sessions, short presentations will be made. Papers may be offered in the three congress languages: English, German and French.
A number of receptions will be offered, as well as excursions to some of the places of interest around Stellenbosch. During the evenings a cultural programme will be on offer in which participants will be exposed to the rich diversity of South African society. There will also be ample opportunity to play in the beautiful surroundings of the Cape Winelands!
In advance: Welcome to Stellenbosch, welcome to South Africa, and welcome to the African continent!
— Johann Cook, President of the IOSOT 2013-2016, Dept of Ancient Studies, University of Stellenbosch, SOUTH AFRICA
